Legendary football coach Bill Belichick has officially signed on as the next head coach for the University of North Carolina, and his contract is nothing short of jaw-dropping. The Tar Heels have secured the six-time Super Bowl champion through 2029 with a deal that instantly places him among the highest-paid coaches in college football.
A $10 Million Per Year Payday
Belichick’s contract will see him earning a whopping $10 million per season. However, the structure of his deal is particularly interesting. His official base salary is just $1 million, while the remaining $9 million comes from what’s described as “supplemental income.”
This massive contract puts him in elite company, as only a handful of college football coaches are earning similar figures. According to USA Today, in 2024, seven coaches made $10 million or more per season, with Georgia’s Kirby Smart leading the pack at over $13 million annually.
Lucrative Incentives Add Even More Value
Beyond his substantial salary, Belichick’s deal includes a variety of performance-based bonuses, making his earning potential even greater:
- College Football Playoff Appearance: $750,000 bonus
- National Championship Victory: $1.75 million bonus
- Making a Bowl Game: $150,000 bonus
- Elite Non-Playoff Bowl Appearance (e.g., Pop-Tarts Bowl, Gator Bowl): $350,000 bonus
- Top 25 Ranking at Season’s End: $250,000 bonus
If North Carolina performs well under Belichick, these bonuses could quickly add millions to his earnings.
A Hefty Buyout Clause
While there has been speculation about whether Belichick might return to the NFL, his contract includes a significant buyout clause to ensure his commitment to UNC. If he leaves for an NFL job before June 1, he would owe the university $10 million. After that date, the buyout drops to $1 million.
Despite multiple NFL teams reportedly reaching out to him, Belichick reassured fans during his introductory press conference that he is in Chapel Hill to stay.
A New Chapter in Belichick’s Legendary Career
At 72 years old, Belichick is taking on an entirely new challenge, transitioning from his historic run with the New England Patriots to the world of college football. His experience, strategic mind, and championship pedigree bring high expectations to the Tar Heels program.
Will Belichick’s NFL success translate to the college game? That remains to be seen. But one thing is certain—North Carolina is investing heavily in a coach they believe can take them to the next level.
