The New England Patriots are making big moves this offseason, and their latest coaching hire brings a wealth of experience to the team. According to reports, former NFL head coach Doug Marrone is set to join Mike Vrabel’s staff, adding another seasoned football mind to the Patriots’ coaching ranks.
Doug Marrone’s Coaching Journey

Marrone, 60, has an extensive background in coaching at both the college and professional levels. Most recently, he worked as a Senior Analyst for Football Strategy at Boston College, assisting Bill O’Brien. Before that, he served as the offensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints (2022-2023) and spent a season coaching under Nick Saban at Alabama in 2021.
His NFL coaching résumé includes head coaching stints with the Buffalo Bills (2013-2014) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2016-2020). In Jacksonville, Marrone led the Jaguars to a 10-6 record in 2017, culminating in an AFC Championship appearance against the Patriots.
Before taking on head coaching roles, Marrone specialized in coaching offensive linemen—a skillset he developed after playing the position himself in the NFL from 1986 to 1991. His coaching career includes stops at various colleges such as Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and Syracuse, where he served as head coach before jumping back into the NFL.
Will This Move Pay Off for New England?
What Marrone Brings to the Patriots
With the Patriots in rebuild mode under Mike Vrabel, Marrone’s addition could be a key piece in revitalizing the offensive line. If he takes over as the Patriots’ offensive line coach, he’ll be replacing Scott Peters, who recently accepted a role with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Marrone joins a highly experienced offensive coaching staff, including:
- Josh McDaniels (Offensive Coordinator)
- Tony Dews (Running Backs Coach)
- Ashton Grant (Quarterbacks Coach)
- Riley Larkin (Offensive Assistant)
Vrabel is clearly surrounding himself with seasoned football minds, and Marrone’s expertise in developing offensive linemen and crafting effective run-blocking schemes could be exactly what the Patriots need.
With the Patriots looking to bounce back from a rough season, the offensive line will be a critical factor in their success. Marrone’s experience coaching in multiple systems—and working under elite coaches like Sean Payton and Nick Saban—makes him a valuable addition.
The question remains: Can he help turn things around for New England’s offense? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
