On January 21, 2025, President Donald Trump’s first full day back in office, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents carried out a nationwide crackdown, arresting 308 undocumented individuals. This large-scale operation focused on sanctuary cities, including Denver, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Seattle, Baltimore, and Miami.
ICE Targets Criminal Offenders
Among those arrested were individuals with serious criminal records. One notable case was Victorino Gaytan-Hernandez, a Mexican national convicted of sexual abuse of a minor in Seattle. Additionally, ICE detained six Guatemalan nationals in Miami, facing charges that ranged from battery to child abuse. These arrests underscore the administration’s commitment to prioritizing the removal of high-risk undocumented individuals.
Trump’s Immigration Crackdown Begins
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enforce immigration laws and enhance border security. Border Czar Tom Homan stated that ICE is focusing on the most serious public safety threats, estimating that 700,000 such individuals remain in the country.
To further strengthen border enforcement, President Trump signed an executive order deploying 1,500 active-duty troops to the southern border, reinforcing efforts to prevent illegal crossings.
What This Means for U.S. Immigration Policy
Trump’s return to the White House marks a shift in immigration enforcement, with a renewed emphasis on deporting undocumented immigrants with criminal backgrounds. With ICE ramping up operations and additional military personnel at the border, the administration is taking swift action to implement its immigration agenda.
