A 46-year-old North Providence man wanted for first-degree murder in New York was taken into custody Wednesday morning by a rare three-agency task force – Rhode Island State Police, the FBI, and the New York City Police Department. The arrest is a reminder that fleeing across state lines doesn’t buy you much time when the feds get involved.
The Arrest
On Wednesday, June 18, 2026, at approximately 8:30 AM, members of the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force – working alongside agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and detectives from the New York City Police Department – arrested Antonio Jimenez, 46, of 39 Sampson Avenue, North Providence, Rhode Island.

Jimenez was wanted as a Fugitive From Justice out of New York State on a charge of Murder in the First Degree. He was taken without incident, processed at the Lincoln Woods Barracks in Lincoln, and arraigned as a Fugitive from Justice at the Sixth Division District Court in Providence County. Authorities have not released details about the underlying New York murder case.
Held Without Bail – and He Waived Extradition
At arraignment, Jimenez did not enter a plea and was held without bail. Court records also indicate he waived extradition – meaning he agreed not to fight being transferred back to New York to face the murder charge there. That’s a notable move; fighting extradition can drag proceedings out for months.
A fugitive hearing is scheduled for July 22, 2026. Until then, Jimenez remains in Rhode Island custody.
How These Multi-Agency Takedowns Work
The Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force isn’t a headline-grabbing unit, but it works constantly. It operates as a joint effort between Rhode Island State Police, federal agencies like the FBI, and out-of-state departments – exactly the kind of collaboration that made Wednesday’s arrest possible. When a murder suspect crosses state lines, the fugitive task force is the mechanism that brings them back.
The NYPD’s involvement points to an active New York murder investigation with enough intelligence to pinpoint Jimenez in North Providence. No details on the underlying case have been released, but a first-degree murder warrant from New York is about as serious as it gets.
What Comes Next
The July 22nd fugitive hearing will likely be brief – extradition was already waived, so the main remaining question is the timeline for transferring Jimenez to New York to face murder charges there. Rhode Island courts will process the paperwork; New York prosecutors will handle the rest.
